Penn State Health changes senior leadership structure

Penn State Health Chief Executive Officer Steve Massini sent an email to managers across the health system and Penn State College of Medicine on Friday:

“To better support our operational and strategic needs, we are changing some of the reporting relationships and responsibilities of Penn State Health’s senior leadership team.

Among the themes that emerged from our recent employee engagement survey were transparency and accountability. These organizational charts are intended to give you a clear picture of the responsibilities and reporting relationships assigned to each of our senior executives.

Over the last several months, I have introduced several new members of our leadership team, and announced some changes in roles. The chart reflects a few additional changes that I’d like to highlight for you. The individuals listed below and shown on the first organizational chart will report to me as CEO. They and other members of the senior leadership team may have additional reporting relationships to other leaders within the University, College of Medicine or health system.

• Alan Brechbill will serve as executive vice president for hospital operations. In this role, Alan will provide administrative oversight for our Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center in Reading with the hospital presidents, Deborah Berini and John Morahan, reporting to him. Alan also will oversee our supply chain operations and the development of our new community hospitals in Cumberland and Lancaster Counties.
• Peter Dillon will be our executive vice president and chief clinical officer. In this role, Dr. Dillon will oversee the development and management of physician services, clinical programs, and physician leadership of clinical services lines across the health system. He will be responsible for coordinating the clinical efforts of our academic chairs, community physician leaders, and independent physicians with an emphasis on enhancing quality of care, patient experience and patient access. He will work with our various clinical leaders and department chairs on the recruitment, retention and strategic deployment of our physician and provider workforce across the region. Dr. Dillon will continue to serve as vice dean for clinical affairs for the College of Medicine and in this capacity he will have a reporting relationship to the Dean.

• Kim Lansford, has been named executive vice president for business risk services and chief compliance officer. She will oversee the audit, compliance, enterprise risk management, cyber security, privacy and business resiliency functions for Penn State Health. Kim will have a direct reporting relationship to the audit and compliance committee of the Penn State Health Board of Directors, in addition to her reporting relationship to me.
• Tom Stoessel has been named executive vice president and chief strategy officer. Tom will have administrative oversight of strategic planning, health network development, administrative leadership of clinical service lines and marketing and communications functions for the health system.
• David Swift, senior vice president and chief human resources officer will continue to oversee all human resources functions for Penn State Health and the College of Medicine.
• Paula Tinch, senior vice president and chief financial officer, will continue to have oversight of financial operations across the system, including revenue cycle, accounting, managed care contracts, financial reporting and budgets.
• Bill Reed will continue to serve as interim chief information officer until our national search for a new CIO is complete. Bill has responsibility for information systems and services across the College of Medicine and Penn State Health.
• Judy Hlafcsak will continue to serve as my chief of staff.

The following individuals will have responsibilities for both Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine with shared reporting relationships to me as CEO of Penn State Health, Kevin Black as Interim Dean and to their respective senior leaders within the University:

• Kelly Altland, associate vice president for development and chief development officer
• Sheilah Borne, associate vice president for government relations
• Annemarie Boyan, general counsel
• Lynette Chappell-Williams, associate dean and chief diversity officer
